Is there any particularly good reason why O-Rock and 740 both disappeared?Surely, it's a money thing.. but man oh man.. Orlando local radio suuuuucks. Real radio during the day is okay, but then you have a poor mans love line mixed with stereotypical dj cliches at night. It's like listening to an ongoing family guy joke. My brother and I were reminiscing about how Monsters used to make fun of those idiots all the time.. now they're the night time show. Awwkward.
And yes, 101.1 is still around, but if I wanted to listen to Nickelback... wait.. What am I saying.. I'd never want to listen to those hacks, nor do I want to listen to any of the other corporate trash that WJRR plays.
Do the radio station corporations own a chunk of satellite radio? Are they trying to make FM radio die a painful death? Or has Orlando just rapidly changed its demographics to the point where only Spanish, manufactured pop and cheesy over-produced lameo-rock stations are able to survive?
I guess I just don't understand the business behind local radio. I'm sure margins are tight and everything is pre-planned and digital now. It just sucks, that's all.
Thank god for my iPod and my tape deck connector.... New school meets the old.

Comments...
(Page 1)1. Yeah I thought it was hilarious that 105.9 was just taken off the air and all the staff fired. But who under the age of, let's say, 30 listens to the radio out of choice? Between good ole fashioned CDs and, as you mentioned, iPod docks, who is cruising around blasting 101.1 or POWER 95.3 or 101.9 that blazes at least 18 jams in an hour.
Also, Nickelback does suck. Like, a lot.

2. Al,
I hear you. Another strange occurrence lately, my favorite AM talk show was taken off the air, and replaced with sports AM talk. So now I literally have nothing to listen to on the radio.
Something to consider though, music choices are getting a bit more fragmented. People get exposure to more obscure tunes these days (thanks Al Gore for the internet), and the way the radio business works, I don't think they can keep up.
Oh yeah, Nickelback really sucks. There's a new Hate Eternal album coming out next month though!

3. There IS an alternative - it's produced for exactly $0, so it's not like it promises to blow you away - it's Rollins' College Radio Station, 91.5 FM. Some talk, some classical, some of everything else. Every 12:00-1:00PM hour is talk, and there are varying degrees of shows in other parts of the day. It is never the same, unless you listen to too much of it, then a pattern emerges, but it takes a LOOOONG time (months) to get sick of anything on that station (if you didn't mind it to start. You can also call just about 24 hours and have your request played - and they have thousands of titles and genres available. Check them out.

4. im pretty sure 101.9 blazez (sic) 18 "jamz" in a row will, get it straight.
its funny you picked nickelback, as i have also recently noticed they are extremely popular on the radio, and the nickelback songs they play are not only terrible, but really old and overplayed.
but i'm going to go ahead and get flamed here, nickelback wasn't always terrible, some of their very early, before they commercialized stuff was much much better.
finally, as much as i hate 102jamz; they are probably the best station on the radio, as i was discussing with gavin earlier, not because of the terrible music, but because they at least play music. whereas the others seems to always be on commercial.
unfortunately when my car got totaled i got stuck listening to radio. i think i became dumber for it.
is this a homegrown CMS? i like it.

6. It's not just Orlando. Radio -- we can generalize this to "broadcast media" -- sucks most places in the U.S. I saw in Wired the other day that commercial FM listenership is down 20% among 18-25 year olds over 10 years ago. Frankly, I'm surprised it's not more.

7. We at SomaCow Media, Inc. hear your plight. We're developing a network of shows to fix the problem. Come by at your leisure, and let us know what you think. We have talk, comedy, sex, music, sports, guys, girls. It's radio for people that are exhausted with the relentless commercialism and corporate silliness. Abandon that noise, and come here some of what we're doing.
Thanks!

From someone IN radio, yep, you've pretty much got it right.
