10 minutes to downtown, is 10 minutes too far...

That line has been my mantra for choosing my places to live over the last however many years. The thought of the suburbs is a scary, scary thing.

Kathryn was living in So. Cal when I moved back down to Florida. She said she'd move there with me, but I wasn't allowed to move her to the burbs. It had to be city. I quietly keep it to myself that Florida is pretty much all what the rest of the world calls suburbs, but managed to find a killer (and I mean killer) apartment in downtown Orlando overlooking the little skyline thats available in the area. It was a perfect staging ground from the world that we were used to -- just enough crime to make us feel alive ;)

It's funny though, because those frightening 'suburbs' that we so desperately wanted to avoid are exactly where we find ourselves now. After searching all over Central Florida, we've bought a home in Satellite Beach, FL.

54 miles of highway separate us from Orlando proper (as defined by UCF, which for those that know me well, I consider to be the center of the free world). I've timed it at 40 minutes to 408 from here on average. Heading downtown, it's seems to be an hour worst case, 45 minutes at best door to door to my old apartment. Even with the added bit of distance, the highways between "here" and "there" make it equivalent to an Oviedo or Orlampa style commute to downtown. The difference is that I'm about 1/4th mile away from a nature preserved beach access (The biggest negative for Orlando was always that its so dang landlocked), close to my family (born and raised here), and in one of the best public school districts in the state.

So far so good. I miss my morning/lunch meet ups with friends (I'm one of those 'never eat alone' kind of guys), but it's great being so close to family. It's also been completely awesome having a really big home office, which was central to our cause when we were looking at places. I can crank the music way up and stay in my own little world here. Condos/apartments make that thing sort of tough sometimes.

Anyhow. I'll still be around probably just as much (which really wasn't all that much these days, anyhow). I'm traveling up to dulles quite often (one or two days a week lately), so that may limit how much I'm downtown. If/when it subsides some I think I'll try to do the tuesday coworking/jelly-ish session at Stardust to stay in the loop.

If you are over in Brevard though, hit me up! Looking to rebuild my connections on this part of town. It's been awhile.

Full circle...

Coming up on three years ago, with where I was at with my life and my career, it made sense for me to leave Orlando. I moved to D.C. with a Honda Civic packed full of whatever I could possibly fit.

I love D.C. It took me a while to find the right people and the right places, but D.C. is an amazing, vibrant town full of passion and energy. Everyone here has something to say and share. You can't help but be exposed to new ideas and cultures. Whenever I'm feeling burned out, all I have to do is take a walk and take in the sights and sounds of the city. It's an inspiring, creative place.

There's something about the grit here that you don't find in southern cities. Yeah, I know, D.C. is technically southern. But really, the best way to describe it is a bunch of yankees pretending to be southern. It's cute. There's southern etiquette (stand on the right side of the escalator), but northern enforcement (we'll push you down and kick you in the stomach if you don't). It's truly a unique vibe, and somehow seems to fit. Charming, in a perverse sort of way.

The majority of the people in this city are some of the most interesting folks you'll ever meet. D.C. has an entire world outside of politics. The music and the arts here are top notch. It's incredibly diverse. It's the highest concentration of advanced degrees in the country, and the conversations you overhear simply meandering around serve as evidence. So many of the stereotypes that I didn't even know I had have been shattered since I've moved here. I've made life long friends that have opened my eyes to new thoughts, views, and cultures. Best of all, I have found a girl that I'm completely in love with. This city has given me quite a lot in a very short period of time, and I've been able to grow tremendously because of it.

But D.C., for all it's grandeur and appeal, isn't home for me. With Emurse doing so well lately, family changes and a bit of my own personal reasoning, I've decided that it's time for me to bid this town adieu.

Three years later, with where I'm at in my life and career, it makes sense for me to leave the district. Next week, I'll be driving home with a 14' UHaul packed full of whatever I can possibly fit.

It's been a blast.

Back in DC...

Thinking about it... I've been "on the road" for all but about ~1.5 weeks in the last ~4.5 months or so. Dang.

I'm finally back at my desk, for what looks to be at least a month. I had hoped to make it back down for UCF's homecoming against ECU, but it's no longer looking likely due to a conflicting engagement. I did, however, just add UCF season basketball tickets to my growing list of reasons to go back to Orlando. Football season only gets me there so much I guess ;)

So let's see... DC->Columbus->DC->Detroit->California->DC->New York->DC->Miami->Orlando->DC I think was the pattern. I might be missing something, but it doesn't matter.

It's good to be back.
